So close/So distant
Screening of extended clips from three experimental documentary films by women that explore mother/daughter relationships: For One More Hour with You (2002) directed by Alina Marazzi; The Ties That Bind (1985) directed by Su Friedrich; and Daughter Rite (1978), directed by Michelle Citron.
The filmmakers use found footage, taken in part from home movies, to reframe, rethink and sift through their childhoods as a quest to understand their adult selves. They highlight the tensions between the intimacy of a shared childhood but also the impenetrability of the mother as an autonomous person with a separate life. While each film uses similar strategies, the differences reflect the nuances that each daughter is dealing with in these varied approaches to the questions they have for themselves through the cinematic reflections on their mothers.
Curated by artist and writer Rachel Garfield, who will introduce the session. The screening will be followed by a brief out loud reading session and discussion.
