Sight and Sound: The best video essays of 2025

The British film journal Sight & Sound has just announced its annual poll on the best video essays of the year. Now in its ninth edition, it brings together 255 video essays, pieces which reflect on the ongoing growth and diversification of the video essay form.

The results of this poll reveal three different ecosystems, academia and film criticism, festivals and art institutions, and social media platforms such as YouTube and Vimeo, offering an illuminating snapshot of this vibrant field of audiovisual criticism.
